It sounds like maybe you have something lodged in the tray or drive mechanisms. If you hold a tray open for too long it will just stop working and remembers that it can't open or close so that it will not burn its motor out. Sometimes the plastic fingers that hold CD's on the tray when turned vertical will break off and fall down into the gears and cause this problem. Try taking it out of the case and shaking it to see if you hear anything rattling. Another cause that could happen is some software you have installed on the computer could be locking the drive. Do you have any sort of adaptec direct CD app running in your taskbar or anything like that. If so disable it remove it and see if it still happens.
